The Weather Window
Challenge:
Weather.com monopolizes the delivery of online weather information. However, Hearst–Argyle has local media outlets across the country that can get users this same information. The challenge was finding a way to present this data that was more enticing than national competitors.
Solution:
Armchair decided on a simplified approach that would allow users to find key information up front and easily dig deeper where they pleased. This intent drove the information architecture and design strategy for the project.
The simple modular dashboard provided the essential information for planning a user’s day. Clicking on any of the boxes would take visitors to more detailed information about the module’s content. Additionally, each of the boxes could be dragged and dropped to prioritize personal preferences.
Each page transformed in real-time to reflect the current conditions and temperature though background and color shifts.
Results:
By simplifying the data and making the site user-friendly in an original way, Armchair was able to raise awareness of previously buried content. With fewer pages to search through the site attracted more visitors. In the first month alone, page views leapt more than 200% and live radar views increased more than 1100%.
